Speak
Live Voice Translator
Tap the microphone and speak. The reply is played aloud. English, Afrikaans, Mandarin, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Russian come first. The next tap asks the phone for the microphone. The recording is not stored.
Listening in English. The reply is spoken in Afrikaans.
No one is charged: not the house, and not the guest. There is no house minute cap on the microphone, the spoken reply, replay, or taking turns. No paid translator is connected, and no key is stored in the page. This is not a 100% accurate translator.
The only path with no daily character allowance is the computer’s own translator, in desktop Chrome, for English, Mandarin, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hindi. It does not run on iPhone or Android. It does not include Afrikaans, Xhosa or Zulu. A desktop without enough memory may also refuse it.
On a phone, and for Afrikaans, Xhosa and Zulu, the words go to MyMemory. That service is free and uses no key. Its published limit is 5,000 characters a day for each connection, and one line must stay under 500 bytes. That is not unlimited. When the allowance is used, the last reply stays and the page says so. It does not invent a translation.
A link to the free Google Translate site is only a fallback when no spoken translation came back. MALE VOICE and FEMALE VOICE are used only when that voice is installed. This was not tested on a physical iPhone or Android microphone.
